I Fly - Perth - Western Australia
Our commission for I FLY was to provide the mechanical engineering design under a design and construct contract.
Vertical wind tunnel with recycled air. Required up to 850kW cooling to offset fan power generated heat loads.
Water cooled chillers with quick-reaction process cooling via chilled water in turning vanes located in the tunnel air stream.
The part of I Fly you don't see or even consider is why the high pressure, high flow rate air stream remains cool. The answer is an industrial / process cooling technique. The whole system can be considered an enormous chilled water fan coil unit, where by the turning vanes at (refer to centre image) act as cooling coils.
Without this the air stream would overheat within minutes. Therefore a robust solution designed to start up in winter or summer was installed.
