I Fly - Perth - Western Australia
Our commission for I FLY was to provide the mechanical engineering design under a design and construct contract.
Vertical wind tunnel with recycled air. Required up to 850kW cooling to offset fan power generated heat loads.
Water cooled chillers with quick-reaction process cooling via chilled water in turning vanes located in the tunnel air stream.
The part of I Fly you don't see or even consider is why the high pressure, high flow rate air stream remains cool. The answer is an industrial / process cooling technique. The whole system can be considered an enormous chilled water fan coil unit, where by the turning vanes at [3] (refer to centre image) act as cooling coils.
Without this the air stream would overheat within minutes. Therefore a robust solution designed to start up in winter or summer was installed.
